Many celebrities have embraced having children in their forties and beyond, including Celine Dion and Viola Davis.

Parenthood hasn’t stopped these celebs from pursuing their careers, either.

Janet Jackson gave birth to her son, Eissa Al Mana, at age 50 and said, “The most important thing I’ve done, the biggest thing I’ve done, is become a mother.”

Every decade of life brings special memories and milestones. However, many celebrities are redefining their 40s in particular. Hollywood stars have expanded the possibilities that can unfold during this decade, and it isn’t a linear experience. For some, it’s embracing a new layered hair care routine, creating their own fashion rules, falling in love with their bodies, or having children.

In recent years, actors like Anne Hathaway and Sienna Miller—who already had children—continued to expand their families after they turned 40. Meanwhile, Aubrey Plaza, 42, announced in April that she’s expecting her first child with boyfriend Christopher Abbott. Veteran actors Al Pacino and Robert de Niro also made headlines for welcoming children well into their 70s and 80s, proving they’re not worried about aging stereotypes.

Al Pacino

1989 was a standout year for Al Pacino. Not only did he make his acting comeback in the film Sea of Love after a four-year hiatus, he also became a first-time dad. At 49, he welcomed his daughter Julie Marie, 36, with ex-girlfriend Jan Tarrant. The Scarface actor continued to expand his family over the next three decades, sharing twins Anton and Olivia, 25, with Beverly D’Angelo and son Roman, 3, with movie producer Noor Alfallah.

Though Pacino and Alfallah split shortly after their child’s birth, she confirmed to TMZ last October that they’re still co-parenting daily. “Who doesn’t want to be together with him?” said Alfallah, 32. “He’s the coolest guy.”

Celine Dion’s road to motherhood was filled with hardships. “The Power of Love” singer went through five failed rounds of IVF before she and her late husband René Angélil welcomed their twins Eddy and Nelson, 13, in 2010. Dion was 42 at the time. The couple—who were married from 1994 until Angélil’s death from throat cancer in 2016—also underwent several fertility treatments to have their first son René-Charles, 25, in 2000.

George Clooney’s ticket to familial paradise started when he was 56. Nearly three years after he and wife Amal Clooney tied the knot in Italy, they welcomed their twins Alexander and Ella in July 2017. The couple relocated to France shortly after their kids’ birth, a decision that the Ocean’s Eleven actor said helped them have a normal childhood.

“I felt like they were never going to get a fair shake at life. France, they kind of don’t give a shit about fame,” George told Esquire in a 2025 interview. “I don’t want them to be walking around worried about paparazzi. I don’t want them being compared to somebody else’s famous kids.”

Gisele Bündchen

Gisele Bündchen was 44 when she had her third child, now a 1-year-old son, with husband Joaquim Valente in 2025. The model also shares 14-year-old son Benjamin and 12-year-old daughter Vivian with ex-husband Tom Brady. As for her latest bundle of joy, Bündchen has kept details about him out of the spotlight. However, she’s documented some of their sweetest moments together on social media, including their trip to French Polynesia earlier this month.

Halle Berry had both of her children after turning 40. Her daughter Nahla Ariela—whom she shares with ex-boyfriend Gabriel Aubry—was born in 2008, when Berry was 41. She then welcomed her son Maceo-Robert Martinez, 11, with ex-husband Olivier Martinez five years later. As the Catwoman star continues to blend her family with fiancé Van Hunt, she’s encouraging her kids to find their voice.

“I really, really, really understand that I’m just the vessel to bring these kids here,” she explained during a roundtable event in 2024, per People. “I don’t expect them to be clones of me, do what I do. I don’t expect to really influence who they become.”

After all, Berry believes her “job” as a mother is to “hold space for them, nurture them, feed them, take care of them, provide them different opportunities, but then they have to decide for themselves.”

Janet Jackson

Janet Jackson became a first-time mom at 50. In 2016, she welcomed her son Eissa, 9, with ex-husband Wissam Al Mana. Similar to her personal life, the “Feedback” singer has kept details about her only child out of the spotlight—but that hasn’t stopped her from praising him. Indeed, Jackson told People in 2024 that Eissa has left a “beautiful impact on my life.”

“The most important thing I’ve done, the biggest thing I’ve done, is become a mother,” she shared. “I wanted to have three children, but thought, ‘I should stop there, that’s probably all I can handle.’ Because you have to give all of yourself.”

Specifically, the Velvet Rope star realized that motherhood mode comes with great responsibility: “You don’t come first anymore. Your life completely changes. And I wouldn’t trade it for anything.”

Meryl Streep started her family—aka, an empire of underrated creatives—with ex-husband Don Gummer at age 30, and had her youngest daughter Louisa Jacobson at 41. Jacobson, alongside her sisters Mamie and Grace, followed in their mom’s footsteps and became actors. Meanwhile, their only brother Henry became a songwriter. As her kids grew into their careers, the Mamma Mia! star revealed that the late Robert Redford “taught” her an important lesson on having children in the spotlight: “They are not your props.”

“I really admired the way he protected his family,” Streep told Good Housekeeping in 2008. “It’s something I consciously emulated.”

Robert De Niro

Al Pacino isn’t the only Godfather who embraced fatherhood in his golden years. His costar Robert De Niro was 79 when he welcomed his seventh child Gia, 3, with girlfriend Tiffany Chen in 2023. Though many fans were stunned at the announcement, De Niro didn’t seem nervous about this new chapter. In fact, he told AARP it “feels great” that he and Chen—who met in 2015—are building a bond with their toddler.

“Everything that I’m consumed with or worried about just goes away when I look at her,” he explained in the 2024 interview. “It’s wondrous. When she gets older, who knows? But [she has] that very sweet way of looking at you, taking you in, thinking and watching and observing.”

The Goodfellas actor is also dad to Drena, 54; Raphael, 49; 30-year-old twins Julian and Airyn; Elliot, 28; and Helen, 14, all from previous relationships.

At 41, Salma Hayek welcomed her daughter Valentina, now 18, with husband François-Henri Pinault in 2007. The French billionaire also shares three children—François-Henri Jr., Mathilde, and Augustin—from previous relationships, and Valentina has built a close bond with her siblings. At 46, the Woman King actor became a first-time mom when she and husband, Julius Tennon, adopted their 16-year-old daughter Genesis. (Tennon also has two adult children from a previous relationship.) And as Genesis continues to get older, Davis shared that she’s always giving her some words of wisdom—and her latest sermon focuses on self-love.

“What I tell my daughter right now is, ‘Genesis, you are the love of your life,’” she told People in 2024. “You have to start right now to have a radical love affair with yourself, to be in touch with your inner voice, what you like, what you don’t like, what’s crossing the boundaries, and you honor that.”
