Donald Trump’s gold-colored mobile phone, marketed as a premium “Made in America” device, is facing criticism after reviewers said it looks nothing like its promotional images, features a smaller screen than advertised and has a finish compared to a “urine sample.”
Golden Trump phone fails to match advertised image
The Trump Mobile T1, priced at $500, launched in June 2025 as a luxury smartphone aimed at Trump supporters. Reviewers said the final product looks “nothing like the original image,” which resembled a modified iPhone 16 Pro.
Patrick Holland, managing editor of CNET, told CNN the phone’s display is smaller than advertised and its gold finish shifts between the look of cartoon coins, mustard and “a urine sample.”
Trump Mobile promoted the device as “Made in America.” Holland noted the packaging instead says “Designed with American values in mind” and “assembled in the USA.”
CNET testing found the device performed similarly to the HTC U24 Pro 5G, a Taiwanese-made phone, undercutting claims of American manufacturing.
Design flaws and symbolic errors
Reviewers from NBC and CNET also highlighted that the American flag etched on the back contains 11 stripes instead of 13.
The phone includes a headphone jack and comes with Truth Social pre-installed. Its selfie camera automatically applies filters, a feature some users found amusing, while others criticized.

Holland said reviewers “don’t know what the processor is” or whether the device will receive software and security updates. Unlike Samsung or Google, Trump Mobile has not committed to long-term support, raising concerns about reliability and security.
The phone was delayed for nine months after launch, with Trump Mobile blaming “incredibly high demand.” CEOPat O’Brien told CNN orders were being processed “as quickly as possible.”
Holland said his “big worry” is whether customers who placed deposits will actually receive the phone, noting that only media reviewers appear to have received units so far.
Data exposure scandal on top of everything else
As the phone began shipping, Trump Mobile faced a data security controversy. YouTubers Coffeezilla and penguinz0, who both said they ordered the T1 phone, reported being contacted by a researcher who discovered exposed customer data online.
“I know that because sadly I am one of those customers whose mailing address, email address, everything short of credit card number is being leaked,” said Coffeezilla, who is known for investigating crypto scams.
Chris Walker, a spokesperson for Trump Mobile, told TechCrunch that the company is investigating the incident and found no evidence that financial information was compromised.
The company said Trump Mobile’s own systems were not breached and blamed a third-party platform provider supporting “certain Trump Mobile operations.” Walker declined to identify the provider.
Researcher Voidzilla also found backend data that appeared to reveal the phone’s actual sales figures. Roughly 10,000 customers had reportedly ordered around 30,000 devices, far below the 600,000 deposits Trump Mobile previously claimed.
