In a new interview with Jesse Tyler Ferguson, Stonestreet revealed why he and his wife kept their wedding ceremony under wraps — even from their immediate family members

The Modern Family star also shared that he might have a second larger wedding celebration

Eric Stonestreet is spilling all the details of his secret wedding.

During his appearance on the Dinner's on Me with Jesse Tyler Ferguson podcast released Tuesday, Jan. 13, Stonestreet, 54, opened up to host Jesse Tyler Ferguson, 50 — who played his husband on Modern Family for 11 seasons from 2009 to 2020 — about his private, family-only wedding to wife Lindsay Schweitzer.

Stonestreet married Schweitzer on Sept. 8, and announced the news on Instagram the following day by sharing several photos from their intimate ceremony, which took place at their newly finished Kansas City, Missouri, home. At the time, Ferguson commented, "Of all second marriages, this one is my favorite! I love you both! I'm so happy for you!!!!😍😍," however, he and the rest of the Modern Family cast were not invited to the celebration.

"I mean, I only found out a few days before everyone else," Ferguson said on his podcast.

Stonestreet explained that a small group of people were told about the wedding via phone calls just before the ceremony. The remainder of his and Schweitzer's family and friends were informed shortly after they tied the knot, before their marriage news broke publicly.

"I hate saying it, but, like, we didn't invite anyone to our wedding other than our family. So the equivalent to an invitation to our wedding was a phone call before the wedding, which was, 'This is your non-invitation, but this is because we love you and we want you to know about it first,' " Stonestreet said. "So there was a group of people that we called and told. Then, we got married, and I had a text all set up, ready to go, and then the moment we got married, we just sent it out to everyone, other people, because, you know, I'm a popular person. I didn't want to offend anyone, but I also didn't want to tell anyone."

He continued, "We wanted it to be a secret because we were keeping it from our family, so it's not like now all of a sudden I'm gonna let everyone know, I'm not my mom, but I just couldn't imagine us getting married and you not knowing about it and other people not knowing about it."

Even the couple's children — Schweitzer's twin sons from a previous relationship — "didn't know until the day of" when they got home from school because they "didn't want them to have to lie or be weird at school."

"When they got home from school, we sat them down and just had a talk with them and told them... And they were just like, 'What?' " Stonestreet remembered, adding that his other relatives also had no idea that a wedding was happening, with everyone under the impression they were coming over for a "family picture" and "first meal in the home."

Everyone's surprised reactions were "hilarious," the Identity Thief star said.

Ferguson admits that he's grateful he was one of the select few to be let in on the news of the top-secret nuptials because he would have had mixed feelings otherwise.

"I'm definitely glad you called me. I would've been, I don't think hurt is the right word, but I would've been surprised," he said.

Stonestreet shared more details from his big day, including the significance behind his wedding date (Sept. 8 falls between Stonestreet and Schweitzer's birthdays, Sept. 9 and Sept. 7, respectively), and his "very random" vows. He then revealed that he might have a second wedding to include those who weren't invited the first time around.

"Lindsey had wanted that date forever, and we didn't wanna wait another year," he said. "So hopefully now we're married and we'll have a party at some point and invite everybody to come."

Exclusively speaking to PEOPLE in October 2025, Modern Family star Ariel Winter shared her reaction to Stonestreet's wedding news after she found out via text message.

"We literally have a group chat going right now, and he sent us all- he didn't tell us that they were doing that. They, like, invited just their close friends and family at their house where they are. Like, literally, I think they had maybe 10 people there," Winter said. "And they, like, invited them over for something and just did that. Came out and got married."

She continued, "It was very sweet. And then they just sent us the pictures in the group chat, and it was really sweet, and, of course, we congratulated them."

She then gushed that she "loves" Stonestreet and Schweitzer.

"Eric and Lindsay are absolutely incredible," Winter said. "She's so wonderful. She's been a part of our family really for a long time, and I'm just so happy for them because she's awesome. So I'm so happy that they made that happen."
