Internet raises over $145K for retiring Domino's delivery driver

Strangers on the internet have raised over $145,000 for a soon-to-retire Domino's Pizza delivery driver whose kindness recently went viral on social media.

A delivery driver identified by local TV station KNTV and NewsNation as Dan Simpson garnered national attention after customers Brian and Katey Wilson posted doorbell camera footage of the March 27 pizza delivery that went above and beyond.

In the video, which has been viewed on TikTok over 3 million times, Simpson told Brian Wilson that the store was out of the Diet Coke he ordered, so he stopped to get it himself on the way to deliver the food. Wilson thanked Simpson profusely, apologized for not giving a bigger tip, and asked to call the store to increase the amount, which Simpson brushed off.

"Oh, you don’t need to," Simpson said in the doorbell video, "It’s a good tip."

That tip amount has since increased, and in a major way. The Wilsons started a GoFundMe for Simpson, who mentioned in the video he'd be retiring in April. As of April 9, the fundraiser has nearly $150,000 in donations.

USA TODAY contacted Domino's on April 9 about Simpson, but has not received an immediate response.

Comments on viral video celebrate delivery driver

The comment section of the viral video, which has over 600,000 likes as of April 9, has since been filled with supportive messages for Simpson and his retirement.

"Him retiring in 26 days and still going above and beyond is so telling," one commenter wrote, along with two heart emojis. Another user wrote, "Dan is why I still believe in humanity."

Many of the comments also referenced how much money the GoFundMe has raised since its start on March 28, with some users saying the donations prove "good people do still exist."

'Thank you for seeing Dan': GoFundMe sees massive support

Simpson has gained much support following the now-viral TikTok video, with the GoFundMe toward his retirement totaling $145,914 as of April 9. The fundraiser's goal is $160,000, meaning it's 92% complete.

The Wilsons wrote in an update on the fund that Simpson's actions were especially helpful to them, considering they are both visually impaired.

"Dan’s extra trip meant we did not have to worry about getting the items we wanted that evening," the update states. "The best part of this story is that Dan didn't know any of that... to him, it was just doing the right thing. To us, it was a powerful reminder that quiet, everyday kindness still exists."

Simpson has worked at Domino's as a second job for 14 years, and the donations will help as he steps into retirement, which is set for April 30, according to the family's update. The Wilsons wrote that they are "thinking about keeping the GoFundMe open until then."

The outpouring of support has blown away Simpson, who the Wilsons described on the website as humble and appreciative.

"Your donations and messages have overwhelmed him with gratitude after so many years of hard work, sacrifice, and rebuilding. We can assure all of you that this money is going directly to Dan to support his retirement and giving him some breathing room," the message stated. "From the bottom of our hearts, thank you for seeing Dan, for celebrating goodness, and for reminding us that doing the right thing still matters."
