In an exclusive interview with PEOPLE, Jonathan Scott revealed why he only wants guests "who actually love our friendship" at his and Deschanel's wedding

The couple, who got engaged in 2023, have said they're not rushing any wedding planning

While Jonathan Scott and Zooey Deschanel are still in the early phases of their wedding planning process, the HGTV star says there’s one important detail they have nailed down.

While chatting with PEOPLE about his new show with twin brother Drew Scott, Property Brothers: Under Pressure, Jonathan, 47, revealed why he and his fiancée, 46, are set on having a smaller guest list for their wedding.

“I've sort of entered this phase of my life now where I'm realizing there are a lot of people around you who… you put way more effort into the relationship than they do,” he explains. “People who I find I'm constantly asking if they would like to go out, if I make plans, would you like to join? And they don't reciprocate.”

Because of this, the couple, who got engaged in August 2023, really only want to have their close circle in attendance on their special day, Jonathan says.

“I think we have decided we want to be around the people who actually love our friendship and love spending time with us,” he continues of his and Deschanel’s wedding day, noting that they’ve been too busy “living life and enjoying the moment” to nail down any other details two and a half years after he proposed.

“So, I'm okay with the idea of something intimate that's just the people who really care,” he adds. “And at some point, we'll figure out a date and a location and all that stuff, but we haven't done it yet.”

This is not the first time Jonathan has expressed his desire to have an intimate wedding and avoid anything “extravagant.”

While speaking to PEOPLE in 2024, the Celebrity IOU star emphasized that the “most important thing” for him and Deschanel is to be surrounded by loved ones when they finally tie the knot.

“We're not planning to do a crazy, extravagant wedding. It's going to be pretty intimate,” he added at the time, noting that the celebrations would likely take place in Los Angeles. The pair live in L.A. in their 1938 “dream home” that they renovated together in 2022, and they also have another recently-renovated abode in New York City.

Last year, Deschanel shared a wedding update in an exclusive interview with PEOPLE, during which she explained that she’s in the “exploratory” phase of planning with Jonathan.

“We're not in a rush because we’ve been together so long, so it’s not like we’re like, ‘We gotta get married.’ I’d rather find the right place and situation, so that it’s really special and fun,” said Deschanel, who shares daughter Elsie, 10, and son Charlie, 8 with her ex-husband Jacob Pechenik.

In the Scott brothers’ new show — which sees the twins help buyers make smart real estate purchases and renovations to their new properties — Jonathan opens up about one very special renovation project involving Deschanel that’s been keeping him busy lately.

He was able to relate to some of his clients, a couple named AJ and Carin, who lost their rental home and everything inside to the L.A. wildfires a year ago. As he and Drew helped them look for a more permanent residence in the premiere episode, Jonathan explained that he’s currently rebuilding Deschanel’s family home of 42 years that was also destroyed in the fires.

Sharing a construction update with PEOPLE, Jonathan said they just recently “poured the slab” at the property, which will be fully fireproof and earthquake resistant so Deschanel's parents “never have to worry about being displaced again.”
