Paris Jackson is opening up about how her journey with addiction once compromised her “moral compass.”
During an appearance on Jack Osbourne's Trying Not to Die podcast, which was released on Tuesday, May 26, the only daughter of Michael Jackson admitted that some of the behavior she exhibited while struggling with drug and alcohol addiction was “really ugly.”
“It's really ugly behavior in a moral way, because I was raised to be kind — not nice, I could give a s--- about being nice — but kind,” Jackson, 28, explained. “Being kind and looking people in the eye and asking the waiter their name so you can write it down on the receipt later, just little things of, just like, how do you treat people?”
Going on to recall going through “years and years and years of self-hatred” before achieving six years of sobriety, Jackson went on to share what went into those difficult feelings.

“‘Oh, I may be a liar, a cheater, a piece of s--t, a thief, whatever, but I do have a moral compass, like, I was raised right in that way' ” she recalled thinking of herself. “What happens when I drink is that goes away. That goes right out the window and I become a very vindictive person.”
Since she first sought treatment for her addictions when she was 17 years old, Jackson recalled noticing “a lot of tell-tale signs” that something set her apart from her peers at a very young age. “I struggled with self-harm for a really long time before I ever had my first drink or drug,” she recalled. “I had weird relationships with overeating and food as a young kid.”

“There was this overall reachy, graspy energy that I only ever see in other addicts,” she added. “Reaching for something outside of yourself.”
In January, the singer-songwriter shared a glimpse into how she's learned to cope and “live life on life's terms” throughout her sobriety journey by sharing clips from her day-to-day life — from spending time with friends and going on nature hikes to spending a few quiet moments alone.
"getting sober ain't always the indication that life is perfect," Jackson wrote on Instagram at the time. "a few years in it all got very very hard. for what felt like an eternity. and i didn't have the same survival skills i was used to having to cope. i had to learn to live life on life's terms."
"treatment resistant major depressive disorder is a bitch,” she continued. “so is CPSTD. and OCD. if you've got this s---, or anything of the sort, you're not alone. hang in there and if no one's told you they love you today, i love you."
