Prince William and Kate Middleton reportedly share a rare marital quality that other royal family couples lack. An author has pointed out what sets them apart from others, including Prince Harry and Meghan Markle. The college sweethearts tied the knot on April 29, 2011, at Westminster Abbey in London, following about 8 years of dating.

The public and media often measure Prince William and Kate Middleton’s marriage against other royal unions. What makes them different, however, is the way they first came together

In his book The Four Wives of Windsor, royal correspondent Simon Vigar has examined Queen Camilla, Princess Diana, Kate Middleton, and Meghan Markle. However, he concluded that only the Princess of Wales “had anything close to a normal romance”.

“As undergraduates at St Andrews University, the friendship between Catherine and William was able to develop slowly and naturally – or at least as normally as possible given the fact that Scotland Yard’s elite Royalty Protection Department was ever-present,” wrote Vigar.

On the contrary, he explained that Princess Diana and Markle were “fast-tracked into the Royal Family” with varying degrees of failure. The Waleses, however, built a friendship over several years before dating, and faced no rush from speculation about a proposal.

In a 2010 interview announcing their engagement, the royal heir had revealed that one reason he waited to propose was to allow Middleton time to “back out.”

“Her and her family, I really want to make sure that they have the best, sort of, guidance and chance to see what life has been like – or what life is like – in the family,” William shared, per Woman & Home. “That’s kind of almost why I’ve been waiting this long is that I wanted to give her a chance to see and to back out if she needed to before it all got too much,” he added.

Today, the Prince and Princess of Wales have marked 15 years together and are proud parents to Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis.
