Seventeen members DK and Seungkwan recently released their first mini album as the subunit DxS, Serenade
The pair shared behind-the-scenes photos and tales from the set of their music video shoot for the single "Blue (Epilogue Ver.)" exclusively with PEOPLE
The normally 13-person K-pop group has been releasing more music in smaller units as various members take time away to complete South Korea's mandatory military service
On a typical day, Seventeenās DK and Seungkwan are two of the groupās most boisterous members. So for the music video for their new duet "Blue" the two vocalists found it in turns totally awkward and refreshingly freeing to lean into the serious ballad.
The K-pop stars shared exclusive behind the scenes photos of their time on the snowy set of the "Epilogue Version" of the video with PEOPLE, and opened up about about the meaningful filming process.
"It was a bit difficult to portray a character different from my usual self," says DK, 28, who can most often be found joking around or acting out for the entertainment of his 12 other bandmates (S.Coups. Jeonghan, Vernon, Jun, Hoshi, Wonwoo, Woozi, The 8, Mingyu, Vernon, Seungkwan and Dino). "But [filming "Blue (Epilogue Ver.)"] became a fun and meaningful experience since I got to show a new side of myself."

When it came time to play someone in the midst of romantic turmoil, the singer (who has also acted on stage in the musical XCalibur) leaned in. "Because the messages in the lyrics held a lot of meaning for me, I focused on expressing those emotions with sincerity," he says.
As usual, he and Seungkwan were on the same page.
"I wanted to convey a subtle yet deep emotional arc through this music video," says Seungkwan, 28, "At first, it felt a bit unfamiliar and awkward to act in a more solemn mood than what I usually show, but that made it more meaningful as it felt like a new challenge."

"While filming, there were moments when the meaning behind the lyrics sank in even more," he adds of the ballad, which is the first single off their mini album, Serenade, and tells the story of "a love moving at different paces," according to a release from their record label PLEDIS.
"Walking along the same road while our gazes passed by, or being left alone in a quiet space, I could really feel the inevitable distance that can exist even in love. Because of that, I was able to deeply soak in the songās heavy, lingering emotion," he shares.

That doesn't mean the earnest video, didn't come with some playful moments for the friends and bandmates of 10-plus years.
Since the stars are mostly not singing along to the track in this version of the video (they previously released the "Cinematic Version"), there was nothing to do but emote. In solo scenes, they stare longingly out at the snow, contemplate love and loss through foggy windows, and stroll through a barren, winter landscape. But when it came time to film together, they found they couldn't keep a straight face.

"There was a scene where we had to look toward the same spot across from each other," says Seungkwan. "We felt too embarrassed to make direct eye contact, so we tried focusing on our emotions by looking at each otherās philtrum [the space between the nose and top lip] instead," he says. "Those small moments are the ones that stay with me the most."
The largely outdoor shoot was set in a frosty wilderness that evokes the isolated feelings in the song, but for DK and Seungkwan, the frigid setting was actually a welcome respite.

"DK and I filmed together starting at the spot where we took [the above] photo with the snowman until the sun set," Seungkwan shares. "Recently, we havenāt really had a chance to be in nature because our tour has been quite busy, so the shoot day felt especially healing as we enjoyed and talked about the beautiful scenery."
Seventeen has been on their "New_" world tour, which included 9 U.S. shows last year, since September. It wraps up this April with a final concert in Seoul.

"As I looked over at the snow-covered surroundings, I could really feel the atmosphere the scenery itself created," explains DK of the meaningful day. "Hearing 'Blue' play through the speakers against that backdrop naturally helped me focus more deeply on the song and its lyrics. I think thatās what allowed the music video to turn out so beautifully."
