President Donald Trump could soon share a name with a Georgia landmark after a state lawmaker proposed renaming a mountain after him.

David Clark, a state representative from Buford, Georgia, called Trump "one of the most transformative presidents in our nation's history," in a Jan. 27 post on X.

Clark said he "introduced a resolution to rename Sawnee Mountain in Forsyth County to Trump Mountain to honor (Trump's) historic legacy of Making America Great Again."

What does the resolution say?

The resolution, HR 1053, was sponsored by Clark as well as Republicans Mitchell Horner (Ringgold), Reynaldo "Rey" Martinez (Loganville) and Josh Bonner (Fayetteville), of the state House of Representatives.

The two-page document is meant to "urge the appropriate state and local authorities to consider" renaming the mountain in recognition of Trump's "leadership and legacy," as well as to commemorate a town hall hosted in Forsyth County by the president during the 2024 campaign.

"Donald J. Trump stands as the most consequential president of the United States for our generation, having fundamentally reshaped American political discourse, governance, economic policy, foreign affairs, and the national debate over constitutional liberties," the resolution says.

It goes on to praise Trump's office for economic growth prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, energy independence, tax reform, unemployment numbers and judge appointments.

The town hall held in Forsyth County in 2024 "holds a unique place in modern American political history" because it focused on female voters, according to the resolution. The resolution sponsors say the town hall brought national attention to the county and solidified Georgia's role as a battleground state in national politics.

Where is Sawnee Mountain?

Sawnee Mountain, and the Sawnee Mountain Preserve, is a 963-acre property in Cumming, Georgia, about 40 minutes north of Atlanta.

The park overlooks the foothills of the North Georgia mountains and includes a natural rock formation called the Indian Seats.

There is a tree canopy classroom, playground, picnic pavilion, climbing area, amphitheater and visitor center on the property.

"Visitors can wander past abandoned gold mines and venture up the mountain on the Indian Seats Trail. This is the perfect location for family photographs, particularly during the fall leaf season. Interpretive signs are located along the trail for visitors to learn about the natural and cultural history of the area," according to Explore Georgia.

Clark part of crowded race for Lt. Governor

The proposal of the resolution comes as Clark continues his run for lieutenant governor in the Georgia midterms.

Clark is a former Green Beret and serves in the House of Representatives for parts of Gwinnett, Forsyth and Hall Counties. He has served in the House since 2015.

Clark is part of a crowded list of Republicans running for the position, including Greg Dolezal, Steve Gooch, John Kennedy, Brenda Nelson-Porter, Blake Tillery and Jerry Timbs. Democrats Seth Clark, Josh McLaurin and Richard N. Wright are also running for the seat.
